Q. How is Security and Privacy in the Cloud Maintained?
A. All data transmitted to NIRIX’s offsite data backup server at our secured datacenter are encrypted with your self-assigned encrypting key before it is sent to us. The encrypting key is NOT stored at NIRIX, nor is it stored on our remote backup servers. Without your encrypting key, the managed backup files are rendered useless to anyone and everyone. Only the user who knows the encrypting key can get access to the managed backup files to retrieve the original content.

Q. Is it Really Safe to Backup Over the Internet?
A. Cloud Computing relies on transferring files and data over the Internet. Transmitting or copying files over the Internet without any sort of security to guard your confidential data (e.g. VPNs, SSL, PGP, Encryption Certificates) is NOT safe. However, NIRIX’s Hosted Backup – Commercial Edition service is highly secured and complies with highly-regulated industry standard encryption methods like AES, TripleDES and TwoFish. NIRIX’s Hosted Backup – Commercial Edition service protects your information with:

Q. How do You Ensure That My Data is Safe and Available When I Need it Most?
A. NIRIX’s world-class datacenter has only the very best equipment. Our entire infrastructure utilizes best-of-breed vendors like Cisco Systems and DELL enterprise-class servers and storage array systems. Our entire redundant infrastructure relies on industry leading Cisco networking technology to ensure that your data is transmitted securely, efficiently and error-free to our offsite data backup servers. NIRIX has the capability to scale our on-demand storage requirements to over 800+ Terabytes (TB) or more of disk-based storage with advanced SAN (Storage Area Networking) technology. If your business requires even higher availability and recovery thresholds, NIRIX can also offer a second-tiered on-premise storage appliance to provide rapid recover of large data sets through our Hosted Backup – Enterprise Edition service.

Q. I Want to Restrict the Ability to Restore Files to Only a Select Few Computers. Can I Do This?
A. Yes, this is possible. We understand that the data being backed up can be very sensitive and that there should be security around who is authorized to restore corporate data and to where. If you have a requirement for the IP Restriction feature, please call the NIRIX CustomerCAre at 780-414-1556 for assistance.

Q. What Should I Do If a Backup Error is Reported in My Backup Report?
A. Try the following: Check if this is a configuration problem (e.g. network problem, proxy setting problem). Check the error logs and activity log which can be located in C:\Program Files\Online-Backup\log (default location) for more information. Try running the backup job again manually to see if the same error occurs.

Q. How Do We Backup “Open Files?”
A. Files should never be backed up while they are in use by an application. When an application is running, it stores its data both in system memory and in data files. Backing up by copying the data files while an application is running would fail to capture the application data stored in system memory. Not only is it backing up less data than it should be backing up, it can also lead to data inconsistency that can eventually result in backup files being unusable by the application. The only correct way to backup an application is to shut down the application before running a backup job (unless hot backup is supported). When an application is shut down, it commits its acquired system memory and flushes all application data from system memory to its data files. The data files now contain everything needed to start an application successfully. Backing up application data files when it is shut down will guarantee data consistency and backup files usability. Please consult our User’s Guide for more information on how to use Pre-Backup commands and Post-Backup commands to shut down and restart an application before/after a backup operation.

Q. If I Have a Large Amount of Data to Restore During a Disaster, How Can I Do That with NIRIX’s Hosted Backup – Commercial Edition Over the Internet?
