TECHNOLOGY CHALLENGES IN THE GOVERNMENT SECTOR

Government IT departments must ensure that technologies their end-users rely on are secure, available at any time of day or night, and can be updated at a moment's notice. This can be extremely challenging:

Security: The government can not afford any unauthorized access of data or applications.

Scale: Most government deployments must be able to scale extensively – often up to five times the size of the largest corporate deployments. In terminal services environments this often results in server creep. For desktop environments, this results in time-consuming and difficult support.

Always on: Government employees – particularly those in internationally and security focused agencies – need to react in real-time to issues at hand. This means having access to critical data 7x24x365, no matter where they are. With so many people relying on this data, it must always be available and the backend systems must be highly reliable.

Complex deployment: In a drive to e-enable the government for maximum efficiency and cost-effectiveness, IT must be able to administer systems and respond to user needs as quickly, easily and cost-effectively as possible. This is challenging when IT is often tasked to support globally dispersed users on heterogeneous computers and varying, limited bandwidth connections.

Mobile support and security: It is extremely difficult to ensure secure storage and retrieval of critical data created and needed by many end-users, including field teams, who work from multiple offices, field locations and in remote geographic locations.
